- For a large majority of people in the U.S., drinking alcohol is a pleasant accompaniment to social activities; one or two drinks occasionally, is not harmful for most adults.
- Facts on Tap was launched during 1998, and is an alcohol prevention initiative designed to educate and inform students about alcohol abuse and to combat binge drinking on college campuses; this government sponsored program reaches out directly to students across the country and provides awareness materials, technical assistance, and training to more than 800 colleges nationwide.
- The (DHSS) has determined that alcohol is the most abused drug in the United States; this could be due to alcohol being easy to access and because drinking is socially acceptable in this country.
- School-aged children of alcoholic parents commonly have academic problems. Academic performance may be a better measure than IQ of the effect of living with an alcoholic parent.
